Fusion are regarded as one of the “main” car audio brands in the UK. This is why we wanted to test just how good their Fusion Subwoofers were for the money. Our test was simple; Pitch the Fusion Sub against 5 models of amplifier. The First model being a 200w RMS amp, the second being a 250w RMS amp, the Third being 300w RMS amp, the Fourth being a 350w RMS amp and the Fifth being a 400w RMS amp. The Fusion Subwoofers that we are using are rated at 150w RMS so we should start seeing some smoke before long... Tee Hee Hee (In a rather creepy super villain style laugh)
We rigged up the Fusion subwoofer to the first amplifier (200w RMS amp). The Fusion subwoofer was free air (not in a box) and it sounded very shallow because of this, no smoke yet though! We turned the volume up and tried to push it as hard as we could. The most we could manage was a little heat coming from the voice coil.
Next along came the second and third amps (250w and 300w RMS respectively). The results were very similar. The Fusion subwoofers actually appeared to take the power quite well. We could tell that it is actually a decent budget subwoofer and would have sounded good in a nice enclosure. All we could muster is a little more heat. Seeing as we were putting twice the power through it than it could handle, it was doing pretty well.
Along came the Fourth amplifier, we really expected the test to be over before now but if it wasn't, then this amp would surely be the killer! 350W RMS should be more than enough to bury this little budget beast into an early grave. We wired it up and cranked up the music, the cone was pumping like crazy and we could see the glue starting to loosen as the cone came slightly loose. We saw a little smoke coming from the voice coil which also heated up quite a lot. It still continued playing though! Nothing could kill it... Or could it!?
The responsibility of killing the sub was put on the shoulders of the very last amplifier we would use, the 400w RMS amp. This is nearly THREE times the power that the subwoofer is stated as being able to handle. At first we had the same results as the Fourth amp test but we realised it was only while it was warming up. After a couple of minutes we realised that this was what we were waiting for.... Death by a power amplifier! The cone ripped itself from the rubber/foam surround and started flapping with every beat. Smoke was pouring from every angle and you could feel the heat coming from it. All of a sudden... BANG! There was a gust of smoke and the sub was no more. It looked like it had been through hell and back.
In summary, these Fusion Subwoofers can actually take quite a lot of power. Its hard to say what they would have sounded like in a box but it certainly didnt die until we went a little crazy! | ||
